Heartland Community College is hosting an exhibit by local artist Michael Amis this fall.
Michael Amis: Distilling Daydreams, is currently on display through October 5 in the Joe McCauley Gallery, located in Room ICB 2507 on Heartland’s Normal campus, 1500 W. Raab Road. An artist talk will take place in ICB 2805 at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, September 20, with a reception to follow from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the gallery.
Amis creates mixed media sculpture and functional blown glassware. In Distilling Daydreams, Amis transforms gallery space with what he describes as unexpected forms, lush color, and playful commentary between textures and materials. His abstract hybrid constructions are made from glass and materials including wood, carpet, metal, and rubber. In addition to his gallery exhibit, the HCC Library also will display Amis' glassware throughout the exhibit.
Born in Kent, England, Amis holds degrees in glass from Wolverhampton University and in product design from the Kent Institute of Art and Design. While earning a Master of Fine Arts degree at Illinois State University, he also studied at Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington. In 1997, he designed and built the glass studio of Kokomo Opalescent Glass in Kokomo, Indiana, and served as the studio director from 1998-2007.
An artist and an educator, Amis operates a glass studio and teaching lab in Bloomington, offering glass blowing lessons to individual students and groups. Locally, he has shown his works in a 2011 solo show, Absent-Minded Utility, at the Heavy Brow Gallery in Bloomington, and at the 2012 Sugar Creek Arts Festival in Normal.
Exhibits, events, and parking at Heartland’s Joe McCauley Gallery are free. Gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about this exhibit, call Danell Dvorak, gallery coordinator, at (309) 268-8599, or contact Heartland’s Humanities and Fine Arts Department at (309) 268-8620.
