BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington is welcoming some new residents.
The zoo's North American river otters, Tallulah and Ozzie, are now proud parents. Their three pups were born at the zoo on February 26.
The birth is rare and a first for Miller Park Zoo.
"These North American River Otters don't breed very well in zoos,” said Miller Park Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff. “There are 110 zoos in North America that have this particular species of otter. Typically only three litters are born throughout the entire continent."
Right now, the pups are spending time with mom and can be seen via a video monitor in the Zoo's Veterinary Hospital room.
They will be introduced to dad, Ozzie, once they are about three months old.
They are expected to go on exhibit in April.
