PEKIN, Ill. -- An event in Pekin today aimed to encourage kids to get to know the people behind the badge.

Its called Cops for Kids.

Police say it's a way for children to learn to trust their local law enforcement officers.

The event is free; a way to foster good relationships between cops and kids.

"We want them to know what we are real people and that they can approach us for help and if we are out in the community we want them to wave at us and say 'hi' and we want them to know that we're their friend," said Mike Eeten, Pekin Police PIO

This was the first of five Cops for Kids events to be held throughout the summer.
