An eatery in downtown Bloomington is using cookies and sandwiches to draw a crowd.
Eric Shangraw goes for lunch at Kelly's Bakery and Café in this week's You Gotta Eat.
A dreary December day actually increases ones desire to venture inside Kelly's Bakery and Café. It's warm and cozy here. Kelly is Kelly Mathy, a fourth grade teacher by day and cookie baking fiend at night. Before opening her business two years ago... Kelly was known to bake and decorate 252 dozen cookies at her home between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's more than three–thousand cookies... she was giving away!
I open in the morning. And then I go to school and teach. And then I come back her and do all that crazy baking.
Kelly Mathy was my daughter's fourth grade teacher. She is very kind. Her husband is very funny and her food is delicious.
The bakery is a fusion of art, sandwiches and cookies. Work from local artists is on display and for sale. Photographer Larry Foulk had the Black Russian sandwich; Angus roast beef, turkey, and provolone cheese with homemade Russian dressing and pumpernickel rye bread. Larry agreed with the description on the menu... it was grilled to perfection. I had the Turkey and Caramelized Onion. This best–selling sandwich has fresh sliced turkey on Italian bread with homemade red pepper and pine nut pesto. If there is an exquisite sandwich, this is it. Our bill with drinks, pickle and a side of homemade creamy–coleslaw; $17.49. We spent another two bucks on a blue–stocking cookie and a Christmas tree with sprinkles cookie. We left Kelly's feeling like an overstuffed Santa ready for a long winters nap.
Kelly's Bakery is on North Center Street in Downtown Bloomington. They are open six days a week... closed Sundays.
