An elegant dinning establishment in downtown Canton is a "must experience" if you are on a culinary tour of Central Illionis.
Eric Shangraw first reviewed The Palm Café eight years ago...
Here is a "Best–Of–You Gotta–Eat" from August of 2000.
The Palm Café is in the historic Canton Hotel one block east of the downtown square.
Be careful not to trip over the tin cooler of bottle coke sitting on the original 105 year old marble floord.
Don't let the pop fool you. This is fine dining at its' best.
"Canton needed something like this," said customer Loren Blackfelner.
"I've been with my husband twice, we like it so much," said customer Linda Candle.
The owner, Gary Leese, a California native, says its' not gourmet, but a European style café.
"We use white linen and tablecloths. And have a fresh menu," said Leese.
The menu changes daily. Today it included a curried Halibut soup and salad. That's what the rural food critic ordered. He declared the soup good. And made a bigger fuss over the salad. Fresh and unique. I had the Marlin steak sandwich. The fish comes on Peta bread with green, tomatoes and onion. It held a secret sauce with the owner would not reveal.
–Very healthy. –Very good.
For dessert, I had the Bavarian apple tort and coffee. The tort made with local summer apples. Dubbs had bread pudding that's drizzled with Ameretto and chocolate. "Ba–very good." Oour bill: $25.00 plus tip. Eric Shangraw News 25.
The Palm Café serves dinner Thursday through Saturday from Five to close.
They also have private dining rooms for special events.
