Eric Shangraw is on assignment today...
preparing for his "You Gotta Eat Special" which airs next Monday night (June 30) at seven o'clock here on WEEK.
So tonight... we pull a "You Gotta Eat" repeat from the deep freeze... which takes us to a restaurant in Canton... which is using the charm of days–gone–by.
(This story originally aired on November 30, 2006)
Katy & Tory's Place is an old grocery store in Canton that's been rehabbed and turned into a restaurant. Pictures of the original Katy and Tory are on display. The " Cantonites" say these two spinsters ran the grocery store after their father built it in the early 1900's. They closed it in 1989. The new owners have recovered original receipts and paper work from the store and put them under the restaurants' glass tabletops.... Churning up old memories.
"We had one lady come in and she started crying. She could not believe how nice it looked inside," said Manager Christy Romine.
"It was so exciting to walk in. This is a door and the pictures undern eath," said customer Pat Juliusson..
The building sat vacant for 15–years until Dave Pickle put in a new ceiling, new wood floor, and stripped the brick walls.
"We wanted to preserve the building because of the history it has with the two original owners. And it seemed like this was the right time," said co-owner David Pickel.
The soup at Katy & Tory's is different each day. I was fortunate enough to be here on "stuffed green pepper" day. Piping hot; like liquid stuffed green pepper should taste. Dubs had the homemade chili. He also had a Crumby Burger... which is a twin sister to the Maid–Rite and just as greasy. I had Christy's Chicken Salad. The menu says its light but filling. That's a fact. I couldn't finish. Thank my lucky star... because that saved room for dessert. –Éclair cake and coffee. Dubbs had the super premium–high–end ice cream; Haley's Comet. –A rich chocolate, vanilla, caramel concoction from Wisconsin. Our bill: $21.44 plus tip. If you want a taste of nostalgia, Katy and Tory's takes you back to a distant decade.
Katy and Tory's Place is on East Birch in Canton.
They open seven days a week from eleven until two for lunch.
They also have special summer hours: open from 5 until 8 in the evening.
