A new pizza joint in Peoria is serving East Coast style pizza pie.
Eric Shangraw takes you to Mikey's Pizza and Subs in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Mikey's Pizza & Subs is offering new flavor to Peoria pizza lovers. Michael Learned, a.k.a. "Mikey," is a Massachusetts native who has brought his East Coast style pizza to Central Illinois. He hand tosses his thin home made crust. And his ingredients are fresh made daily.
"East Coast pizza tends to be a little thinner. We like to stretch our dough. I toss it up in the air a bit. We make it nice and even," said Learned.
"This is unusual because it has a coating on the top. I have a Calzone. That is the owner over there. Is this homemade dough? It is homemade crust! And what about your marina sauce? Everything is homemade! My goodness, it is delicious!" said customer Debra Drago between bites.
Photographer Joe Bennett ordered a Specialty Calzone. His Buffalo Chicken medium is made with grilled chicken, hot sauce, Bleu cheese and mozzarella cheese. It was spicy and actually made Joe perspire. He liked it. I had the Personal 10–inch Meat Lovers stuffed pizza. Pepperoni, ham, sausage, ground beef, and bacon. The sauce comes on the side. It's ten inches of pizza perfection... and enough for two mouths instead of just one. Joe had the same issue. His Calzone bigger than his single–guy who doesn't' eat enough appetite. We also had drinks and free refills. Our bill: $18.51. Mikey's is made for pizza connoisseurs.
Mikey's Pizza & Subs is open seven days week.
He's on Gale Avenue in the former "La Gondola" location.
Mikey's delivers on Friday and Saturday nights.
