The warming weather means outdoor picnics and hamburgers on the grill.
It also is a great time for a meal on the river.
Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Captain Ron's in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Jimmy Buffet would go to Captain Ron's. It is a riverside fantasy land where you go to escape from the real world.
Just ask the collection of Caterpillar workers escaping their cocoon over the lunch hour.
"We work in an office without any windows, so this is a nice break. Get outside and enjoy the nice weather," said customer and Caterpillar worker Brian Barney.
"This is our annual pilgrimage to get out at the start of summer. We feel like this is a nice place to come and do some team building," said customer and Caterpillar worker Mike Joyner.
Inside Captain Ron's is a décor balancing between country-tavern beach-nautical. On nice days, the back patio is the place to be. Over looking the river traffic and soaking in sun.
The deck is well weathered by mother nature, but owners Ron and Debbie Richards make sure the food is always consistent.
"We have daily lunch specials. We have all you can eat Walleye on Friday nights," said Ron Richards.
Photographer Doug Smith had The Burger. A thick half pound piece of beef and a side of sweet potato fries. He at first scorned the special sauce for the sweet potato fries. Thought it was brown mustard. Turns out its butter with cinnamon and brown sugar. He loved it and the juicy burger. I had the Seafood salad. It was topped with a grilled salmon slab. Cajun seasoning. Crispy like the bed of lettuce and fresh cucumbers and tomatoes swimming on the plate. A truly satisfying salad on a summer like day.
Our bill with drinks, 18-dollars plus tip. It's not south beach... But after a cold winter in Peoria, Captain Ron's is a refreshing change.
Captain Ron's kitchen is open seven days a week. The bar is open until four in the morning on Friday and Saturday night.
