Lunch is in Rome today. South Rome.

It it in the sun. On the river.

Eric Shangraw is having lunch at the River Beach Pub and Eatery in this week's You Gotta Eat.

The River Beach Pub and Eatery sits along the Illinois River in South Rome.

On most any weekday lunch hour, it is hoping with Caterpillar Mossville plant eaters. Taking in calories and the scenery.

"They have a great view of the river. Food is always outstanding. I had the pub burger with fries. They have a special seasoning they put on their fries that I think is real good," said customer Dave Rockwell.

"It is always a place you can count on when you come to go have a good lunch, said customer Diane Samp.

But the calorie count does not have to be outrageous. The Pub is run by Brenda Erickson, who's out front with the customers and her husband. Larry pays bills and helps where needed, like refreshing the salad station with new lettuce.

"We have pub food but we also have a lot of healthy food. Salmon salads. And salmon dinners. Tuna steak. So we have a lot of healthy food, too," said Larry.

"During the winter the trees right over there have eagles that come out. They are really beautiful. They put their nest over there in that tree," said Brenda.

I ordered from the healthy end of the menu spectrum by starting with grilled Asparagus as an appetizer. The stalk is prepared in olive oil which helps hold a smart seasoning. Tender but not over done. Exquisite veggie preparation.

I stayed calorie conscious with the Tuna Steak Salad. Grilled tuna steak on a bed of crisp lettuce with sliced egg, tomato, onion and croutons. It is one of the more expensive lunch items at $8.95. Filling and fresh.

Larry consumed from the other end. He had the Signature Beef Brisket Sandwich. Slow cooked beef brisket. He described it as tender and tasty. Larry liked it with River Beach Dressing; a honey, mayo, and jalapeno sauce with a bite. It was actually paired with River Chips. A warm-house made potato chip. Insist on eating them fresh and still warm. It was the best lunch of the work week.

Our bill with drinks and appetizer: $27.36 plus tip.

Sitting beside the river eating potato chips has never been so rewarding.

The River Beach Pub and Eatery is North River Beach Drive right off Route-29. They're open six days a week. Closed Sundays and Memorial Day.
