DUNLAP, Ill -- Located right off Route 40 in Dunlap, Knuckles Pizza is a short drive to experience a slice of Quad Cities style pizza.
But what is Quad Cities Style Pizza?
I didn't know, so I asked owner Mindy Moore.
"The crust has kind of a malty taste and then our sausage is a little spicy," said Moore. "We use all fresh ingredients and the sauce is a special recipe sauce so it all has to do with the recipes and the way it is put together."
Moore and her husband Tom grew up in the Quad Cities and have always wanted to bring the pizza they grew up on to Central Illinois.
In spring of 2011 they purchased the former Chef Johns building and started offering carry out pizza.
Now the sports themed restaurant includes a full menu with sandwiches and salads.
I invited owner Mindy Moore to join me for lunch, and by recommendation I started with the Knuckle Knots.
The knotted breadsticks are brushed with garlic butter and parmesan and come with three dipping sauces.
Then on to the main meal.
I ordered a 12 inch meat lovers pizza called "The Grand Slam."
It's layered with sausage and pepperoni and sprinkled with Canadian bacon.
And I must say as I bit into my first slice of Quad Cities pizza, I was impressed.
Then to wrap it up, I tried the desert version of the Knuckle Knots -- Cinn-a-Knots.
My bill came to 17.88 plus tip.
And afterwords I even had enough leftovers to feed a hungry newsroom.
Knuckle's Quad Cities Style pizza opens at 11am daily. They close at 9pm Sunday through Thursday and are open until 10 Friday and Saturday.
