CREVE COEUR, Ill. -- In the summer, Kuchie's on the Water in Creve Coeur is more known as a bar with good food.

In the winter, the owners battle the drop in customers by concentrating more on the kitchen.

"Challenging is good,” says Co-owner Jan Little. “We lose about 80 to 90 percent of the business during the winter, but we have really good food. People still come down here."

Kuchie's is owned by Little and Mike Kuchan, whom the restaurant is named after.

Kuchie's on the Water may have some standard bar food items, but you won’t find them prepared the same way anywhere in the area.

"Hmm. No,” Little agrees. “Half-pound Angus burgers. We do high-quality food. We do nice, big portions. There's a lot of to-go boxes that leave here."

The sauces and dressings are mostly home-made, such as the cheese spread I ordered as an appetizer.

Photographer Doug Smith ordered Coconut Shrimp and said he prefers more coconut.

The cheese spread is rich with a mild cheddar flavor and worth taking home in a container

Doug ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and asked for a slice of pineapple on it. It's something Doug special orders occasionally, so it means a lot when he says a meal meets his standards.

I had the chicken tenders on ciabatta bread with grilled jalapenos, barbecue sauce, bacon and Swiss cheese, also known as the Moby Dick Sandwich.

You won't find this recipe anywhere else and its well worth the trek to Creve Coeur if you want to try it.

For dessert Doug had key lime pie and I had another specialty, the corn fritters.

They are the best I've had and we recommend ordering some chocolate sauce on the side.

And there are sweet potato fries with an amazing home-made cinnamon sauce.

Our bill with drinks was $45.25 plus tip.

In a month or so, be sure to check out the outside decks.

"We have one of the prettiest views of the river,” Little says. “There's always something going on out there. There's always entertainment out the windows."

Kuchie's on the Water is located at 579 Wesley Road in Creve Coeur.

They are open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

They open at noon on Sunday and are closed Monday.
