MORTON, Ill. -- A few Christmas decorations aside, The Downtown Diner in Morton has a minimalistic approach to its décor.
And that's just what the average customer here expects.
"Your basic Mom and Pop's breakfast-lunch diner, your classic skillets, pancakes, eggs, bacon and all that good stuff."
It's so classic that we tried a little bit of all of those things.
And there will soon be even more to offer while sticking to traditional ingredients.
"I know we're doing some more veggies where you can build your own skillets and omelets, offering more like spinach and different things," said Head Server Amber May.
They will also be offering wraps for those of us changing our diets next year.
The most commonly ordered sandwich is the Downtown Diner's tenderloin, cut by a butcher in Tremont called Beecham's.
The diner takes care of the breading.
"It's always a big seller for our lunch,” May said. “And our burgers are awesome."
Photographer Doug Smith was almost sold on the tenderloin but instead ordered breakfast.
Two eggs sunny side up, ham, potatoes, and toast with a side of bacon.
Doug didn't say much about the meal itself, but he cleaned his plate before I did and immediately dug in to some pumpkin pancakes we were offered as a free sample.
From Doug, that's a compliment in and of itself.
I had the Veggie Skillet loaded with green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes.
I was expecting the vegetables to be caramelized or sautéed but was pleasantly surprised to find a medley of crisp, fresh cut vegetables hiding beneath two eggs over easy.
I, too, cleaned my plate before trying the pumpkin pancakes, which I definitely recommend.
Our meals with coffee and a soft drink came to $21.37, plus tip.
The good service is certainly worth mentioning as well.
Our drinks were consistently refilled with a smile that came with conversation.
"We're told to have a good time,” May said. “You get your job done, but it's a great atmosphere. Everyone just jokes around with each other and what not."
The Downtown Diner in Morton is located at 112 West Adams.
They are open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week.
