PEORIA, Ill -- Rose and Michael Bbayee opened Chicago Grill nearly ten years ago, adding a touch of the Windy City to the River City.
"My husband, he's originally from Chicago," Rose Bbayee says. "He lived there for 25 years. I learned from him, a lot, to cook Chicago food."
And she's learned well.
After asking regular customers what they often order, the gyro was the clear favorite.
Rose says Chicago Grill only serves Kronos gyros, a Greek company using Greek spices.
"Just the way the lamb on the rotisserie tastes. It's really good," says Chicago Grill regular and gyro lover Jamie Swingler. "And I don't know what kind of seasoning they use, but it really brings out the flavor."
"They have a lot of wonderful little places in Chicago just like this," Camie Zwicky says. "You just walk in and it's easy-going."
One of those places in the city by the lake is known for it's Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, which is something the Bbayees recently added to the menu.
"They say if not really close to Giordano's, they say maybe it's too familiar or maybe a little bit better from Giordano's," Rose says with a modest smile.
Photographer Larry Foulk and I tried a sample, reminding me of my college days in the loop.
Larry tried a regular gyro for lunch, as soon as he figured out a plan of attacking the monster sandwich.
I was craving an unhealthy and delicious dose of Vienna Beef, so I opted for the jumbo chili cheese dog.
It was so good it didn't even need additional condiments.
As for the sides, imagine your favorite fast food french fries cooked with more love and less salt.
Our total with two drinks plus tip, $17.95.
For those looking for nearby food reminding them of the Second City, Chicago Grill is second to none.
Chicago Grill is at 814 W. Pioneer Parkway in Peoria.
