PEORIA, Ill. -- Beignets on the Corner is located on the corner of State and Water Streets in Peoria. It's a small place, with a menu of moderately priced comfort food inspired --the operators say -- by French, Cajun and Creole cooking.
This video was shot on Valentine's Day, and we found one couple sharing a bottle of wine and a light lunch.
Also on hand, Peoria restaurateur -- and now Senate candidate--- Pat Sullivan. He and business partner John Hunt have taken over Beignet's and plan to add to the menu, while keeping its creole flavor.
Anna Yee - who'd never been to Beignets-- had volunteered to be my guest eater.
She started off with a Ensalada de Berros, a salad which included grapefruit and avocado. She called it crunchy and fresh.
I had a cup of shrimp bisque. It was warm and delicious.
Since we were eating New Orleans style, I had ordered the red beans and rice with smoked sausage, green onions and mushrooms.
I liked it and I suspect this item has been toned down a little for Midwestern taste buds, but I'm told there's a super spicy "ghost chili" sauce which can be added if spicy-hot is your definition of a good time.
Anna, sticking with the Creole menu, had the gumbo. Not too spicy and good.
If you're going to Beignet's, bring an appetite. There's a lot on the plate. I could not finish my red beans and rice, and I tried.
Of course, we couldn't leave without trying the signature item...the beignets. Fried dough pastries heaped with powered sugar and with a lemon dipping sauce. And, because it was Valentine's day, we decided to split a "mile high chocolate cake".
No wonder I had to push the car seat back on the drive home.
Our bill, with my soft drink, came to a total of $33.08.
Beignet's On The Corner is open for lunch and dinner week-days, Saturdays from 4 - 10, and closed Sunday.
