PEORIA, Ill. -- Perhaps the key component that any business strives for is consistency in service.
At Famous City Bistro in Peoria, the food has consistently improved to a point of excellence in just two years.
It was pretty good the first time we went just after they opened. It was even better when we returned. This week, the meals we had were excellent in every way.
"We just have sandwiches from all of the major cities and important cities where certain food is popular," said owner Ken Humphrey.
For instance, the Nashville Pulled Pork Nachos have a wonderful favorite mix of nacho flavors: cheddar jack cheese, beans, Pico de Gallo, jalapenos, sour cream, salsa, and the best ingredient: barbecue pulled pork.
For my sandwich, I had the Iowa City Pork Loin, maple-cured and slow roasted then smoked and sliced and piled on a pretzel roll with melted cheese.
The pork loin is tender with more sweet than salt, and it is a contender for the best Famous City sandwich
Doug maintained the pork theme with the Memphis Pulled Pork, which is smoked for over 12 hours in a rotisserie smoker with cherry and hickory wood.
Doug says he may have found his new local barbecue place at Famous City Bistro, but regular customers tell us the tenderloin is literally the bistro's biggest sandwich.
"I normally go for the tenderloin,” said David Williams. “It's just way too much for lunch. "
The tenderloin is named after our own home town, called the Peoria Pork Tenderloin
Other Famous City sandwiches include the Miami Cuban, Chicago Italian Beef and Vegas Turkey Jack.
Speaking of Vegas, Famous City Bistro now has video gaming, which Humphrey says paid out $250,000 since March.
"People feel comfortable here,” said Humphrey. “We have good food, we have excellent service, and we will do anything we can to help the customer be happy."
For an appetizer, two meals, and two soft drinks, we paid $35.90 plus tip.
Famous City Bistro is at 629 West Glen Avenue in Peoria.
They are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
