You Gotta Eat: EP's Timeout

This week on "You Gotta Eat", we're featuring a place that offers more than the usual sports bar--we're heading off to EP's Timeout for lunch today.

It's hard to miss EP's Timeout. The flashing sign out front, the neon lights. It all just screams "sports bar"....which it is.

Inside, there's the number of requisite pictures of athletes, sports jerseys and large TV sets, and one jumbo-tron sized screen for whatever game that no one wants to miss.

For Ken Meischner, one of the "motley group of locals" who own the place, the idea of a sports bar like this was in the back of his mind for a long time..

"When I came down here and saw all the TVs on the wall and the potential it had, I said, 'this is what I've been looking for," said Meischner.

But Meischner says EP's is getting a reputation as a restaurant. Evidenced by one particular group, perhaps lured in by the five dollar lunch menu. Not your usual sports bar crowd.

I ordered a roast beef sandwich with mashed potato and gravy.

Photographer Doug Smith wanted a hamburger meal, which included salad and soup. He got the salad and gave me his potato soup.

Okay, that's two potatoes in the same meal. I'm Scots-Irish, sue me! It was a good hot tasty soup.

The generous-sized roast beef sandwich is drenched in gravy, the mashed potato like mom used to make. I found the roast beef very nicely done, Doug tried some as well, and agreed.

For dessert, Doug ordered--at my suggestion -- the Twinkie, quick fried in waffle-batter with ice cream. Really.

Doug not only ate it all, he then suggested to Ken that it might need powered sugar to make it sweeter.

EP's offers a breakfast menu from 7 am to 11 am, offers banquet and outside seating, carryout service and live music.

Check out their website, www.epstimeout.com for the menu and schedule of events.

EP's timeout is located at 1011 East Washington Street, open seven days a week.
