BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Twin restaurants in the twin cities offer a wide selection of deli sandwiches and home-made baked goods.
Denny's Doughnuts and Bakery and Bagelmen's in Bloomington are a one-stop-shop if you're in the mood for baked goods for breakfast and deli-sandwiches for lunch.
"We took that over and inserted our own doughnuts and bakery items with it. Right now we're doing our strawberry glazed doughnut with a chocolate drizzle,” said co-owner David Marquardt. “We do our fan favorite, it's the orange juice doughnut. We do a french toast doughnut and gingerbread doughnut throughout the year."
Photographer Doug Smith ordered the lunch combo: a roast beef croissant with American cheese, lettuce, mustard, bagel chips, cole slaw and a soft drink.
Reporter Joe Bennett had the Western Irving breakfast bagel, which comes with scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, Canadian bacon, green peppers and onions. He also had the coffee flavor of the day, chocolate fudge.
For the breakfast and lunch combo, they paid $23.07, plus tip.
Just to satisfy their sugar cravings, Doug and Joe also ordered a couple of crème horns and a dozen assorted dozens. The orange juice doughnuts were as good as the regulars say, and the crème horns were crisp and airy with a light filling. Our dessert pastries and doughnuts came to $12.04, plus tip.
Denny's Doughnuts and Bagelmen's is located at 1503 East Vernon Avenue in Bloomington.
