WASHINGTON, Ill -- "Gracie's" Chicago Style Grille is located on Cummings Lane in Washington.
Gracie's is a combination sports bar and restaurant, on this day with families and local business people taking advantage of the buffet.
You Gotta Eat visited here first in April of 2008, when the restaurant had just moved to this location from a much smaller venue down the street.
Since then, owner Gregory Wilson says the eatery has added employees and to the menu and picked up awards for their appetizers, entrees and desserts.
The owner Gregory Wilson says "we've evolved into a full size restaurant. Washington has been very good for us. "
Since we were looking for "big eats", I went for the ten-inch Chicago-style deep dish three-meat pizza.
You've got to know this is a pizza made in reverse," says Wilson. "The heese is on the bottom, the toppings in the middle, and instead of a tomato sauce, we've got a whole plum tomato puree on the top."
Photographer Doug Smith, still looking for the perfect sandwich, ordered the Cuban.
"After smoking the pork, we pull it apartment and put in to a roll. We do something special with the pork, we sear it and add a citrus and vinegar to give it a little tangy taste."
The 10-inch Deep-dish pizza is by any measure, a full meal. First, mine tasted just great. Second, this is not casual finger food. If you order this, bring an appetite, or a friend. Maybe two friends. Third, be aware it takes 25 minutes to prepare, so you might want to order ahead. Gracie's has a complete menu on-line.
Doug said his Cuban sandwich was almost perfect. He loved it. He finished it. Shamefully, I had to bring half my pizza back to the newsroom. I couldn't finish.
Our bill, with two soft drinks, and chips and a side salad for Doug, came to $35.26.
Gracie's is open daily at 11-AM, with later closing hours Friday and Saturday.
