DUNLAP, Ill. -- Jane's Icebox is on First Street in Dunlap and bills itself as Dunlap's family restaurant.
At noon today, there was a crowd of locals taking in the bill of fare---talking about the weather and last night's bradley loss.
Jane's owner and chef is Chris Icenogle, and we caught up with him back in the kitchen---taking care of business.
"How's it working for you?"
"Five years now, we're beating the odds. It's been quite an experience. The people in dunlap have been very welcoming."
Jane's Ice Box is the kind of eatery I grew up with in a farming community. Breakfast available all day, where folks come to meet, eat and talk...the walls decorated with pictures of the high school teams and Dunlap businesses.
I ordered a country breakfast---the corned beef hash with hash brown potatos, scrambled eggs and toast.
Larry decided against the two pound tenderloin and had a philly chicken sandwich with potato wedges instead.
This is breakfast heaven. Larry's sandwich was sufficiently stuffed to make a knife and fork necessary.
Chris produced a special pancake for dessert, with pecans and sugar---something that wasn't on the menu when i was growing up.
Our bill, with soft drinks, came to $19.16.
