PEORIA, Ill. -- In this You Gotta Eat, we have an underground eating experience. In this case, we're heading downtown...and down.

To get to Richard's Pub and Grill just follow the instructions on the flashing sign: go downstairs. One flight down, you'll find an eatery with a unique décor and history.

This restaurant is located in what was -- once upon a time -- the storage area of the Apollo Theater. Their ceiling is pressed tin, the walls are decorated with photos of Peoria's past, including a once scandalous painting.

On the other hand, there's enough TVs on the walls to make sure you don't miss a moment of a game. There's a game area, with pool tables, which is actually under what was the Central Bank building.

That illustrates Richard's dual persona. A lunch crowd of office workers and in the evening, a place to go after ball games or civic center events.

"We try to cater to everybody," said Dave Remington, owner of Richard's Pub. "We don't try to isolate just to Bradley students, or just the business climate or post Civic Center events. We try to be here for everybody. We serve food 'til 4 a.m. nearly every single night, and subsequently we've got a pretty good following for that".

The menu echoes that philosophy, offering everything from bar food to fillet Mignon.

I went for the healthy options on the extensive menu: potato soup, steamed veggies and a turkey burger with tangy sauce for zip.

Photographer Larry Foulk went for the potato soup as well and the roast beef special. Special as in "especially filling."

My burger was tasty, the veggies hot and crisp and the soup delicious, since it had bacon and cheese in it. mmm bacon.

Our bill, with soft drinks, came to $27.61.

Richard's On Main is open Monday through Saturday at 11, and open late, or early morning, nearly every day.
