NORMAL, Ill. -- Tonight on You Gotta Eat, it's a trip off to the twin cities for an outdoor lunch.
The Garlic Press has been in Normal for since 1974, just not exactly this Garlic Press.
Beginning as a cookware shop, it became a place for cooking classes, added retail space for jewelry, and seven years ago, expanded and added this café. It was busy with students, office workers and retirees.
So, there's a little something for everybody. Want to buy a dinosaur back pack? This is the place.
But we were here to eat.
One of the owners, Jackie Pope-Ganser, gave us the lowdown on the philosophy of food here.
Since it was a nice day, we ate on the sidewalk and enjoyed the ambiance of a college town on a warm Spring day.
Keeping up my healthy eating program, I went for an artichoke tuna salad sandwich, which comes with tomatoes, sweet red onion and romaine lettuce on multigrain bread.
Photographer Doug Smith decided to have a mesquite smoked beef brisket with sweet and spicy pepper medley and provolone cheese on a hoagie roll. He skipped the horseradish sauce and added mustard. It was all good.
I was assured this chocolate sprinkle cookie was lot-fat, so I had one. Doug insisted one cookie is not a dessert and had a cookie and a slice of pie.
With Doug's tea, it all came to $23.75. The Garlic Press Market café is open seven days a week. Make extra time for shopping.
