Davis Bros. Pizza

A local pizza parlor has sixty years of history helping support its success.

Davis Brothers Pizza started in East Peoria in 1948.

As Eric Shangraw explains in this week's You Gotta Eat, the unique recipe is now available almost anywhere in the country.

Davis Bros. Pizza is a passion for its fans and its owner. The original recipe is unique but simple. Thin crust. Light sauce. Finely ground lean meat and diced toppings which always include onion and green pepper. Thick slices of cheese on top give it a one of kind look, but the light sauce makes the biggest difference.

"It is just enough sauce to give it a little bit of flavor," said customer Roger Miller. "But you are getting most of your flavor from the better ingredients. The meat and the cheese. And the green pepper and onion. So you are not overwhelming all those ingredients with just the sauce," he said.

"It is just different than other pizzas," said customer Karen Springer. "I think it is the ground beef that is so finely chopped," she said.

"I enjoy their pizza very much," said customer Gene Springer. "And that goes back probably 50 year ago when we where in high school and the fist pizza place was Davis Bros in East Peoria. And I can still remember that," he said.

Cheryl Scott is a Peoria native. She moved to Texas nine years ago. When she heard her favorite childhood pizza joint was for sale, she bought it. Now she's selling them frozen on line and in grocery stores around the country.

She bought the original recipe with the store. The recipe is followed exactly when a pizza is made to order. The frozen pizza selection has a slightly different cheese.

"The only thing we had to sacrifice with the frozen pizza was we had to go to shredded cheese instead of the sliced cheese," said Scott. "We just couldn't make that work financially and with the machinery. So we had to go with a shredded cheese. But other than that it is exactly the same," she said.

Photographer Doug Smith started with the salad bar. We also ordered the all new Pizzamales. It is a tamale with Davis Bros. sausage and sauce in corn meal. They are as easy to eat as the pizza pie. I had a seven inch Deluxe. Doug had a nine-incher with extra sauce, no onion or pepper, with pepperoni and Canadian bacon. Its so easy to eat, the pie is gone in a matter of minutes. Our bill with drinks; $31.46 plus tip. It is a classic central Illinois flavor.

Davis Bros. is in East Peoria and Peoria Heights. The Heights location is open six days a week.
