A Chillicothe business is offering an island get-a-way when you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Eric Shangraw is trying a fried hamburger at Castaways Bar and Grill in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Castaways Bar and Grill is on Route-29 in Chillicothe but its feel is ocean side.
Not your typical pub with grub.
The tropical theme and island décor has lots of lime green colors and many fish. The only missing element is the sound of crashing waves outside.
"It is more of a beach setting and that is what I like about it," said customer Todd Rusk.
"It is not real fancy at all. It is kind of laid back. Everybody just is kind of friends," said customer Jennifer Koo rs.
There is an outdoor beer garden where you can mingle with friends and an outdoor grill if you and a friend are hungry but on the run.
Amanda Cornell is Castaways captain. "Everything we have is fresh made to order. We try and bring in new ingredients. New products. We just try and serve you fresh food in new and inventive ways," she said.
Amanda and some friends invented the O'Burger. It starts with a quarter pound of ground beef shaped into a bowl. You can order it stuffed with a variety of toppings like onions and pickles. Another patty of beef is used as a lid; its sealed and placed on the grill. Later its battered and deep fried!
Give Amanda credit for brutal honesty when questioned about the O'burgers coronary clogging capability.
"Oh, it is horrible for you. But it tastes good. It is the calories that make it taste good," she said.
Photographer Doug Smith and I started with a basket of onion rings. They use a special batter on their onions which is delightful.
Doug ordered the Ribeye sandwich with onions and mushrooms and a side order of fresh cooked fries.
Sheer curiosity and Amanda's Abe Lincoln like truthiness sold me on the O'Burger. Oh my gosh is one expression when biting down on the juicy hunk-o-fried beef. The batter, outside the beef, surrounding the stuffing is a fried food lovers smorgasbord. I could only finish half. In an episode of Man versus Food, food wins this round.
Our bill with drinks; 26-dollars plus tip.
