Jim's Bistro

A Peoria Heights restaurant is offering a first class experience in a close knit atmosphere.

Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Jim's Bistro in this week's You Gotta Eat.

Jim's Bistro is an elegant eatery in Peoria Heights. It is where bankers and brokers and regular Joe's go to eat good grub.

"It is just daily comfort food and they have good chefs," said customer Hylee Kemp. "They have great meals like the meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans and all them things we like," he said.

"It is not your normal restaurant. It has got a unique atmosphere," said customer Larry Dunn.

Jim's popularity is evident in the lunch-hour crowd sitting elbow to elbow under the pressed tin ceiling. You're likely to see someone who is somebody breaking bread at Jim's. The bistro ambiance has a certain cool-confidence. It comes from owner JD Comfort. He is a second generation restaurateur.

"It is quaint. People like it. I like the smaller size restaurant. It is easier to handle and to manage. And the money is better. So it works out well here," said Comfort.

Photographer Doug Smith started with a little cup of chili, made by JD. He liked it.

We both had one of the Bistro hamburgers. These are not your average ten-ounce beef patties. They are made with steak; ground fillet and New York strip.

We both agree Jim's may be the best burger ever made. Perfectly cooked. Juicy. Did I mention they were made with steak?

I ordered the coleslaw. It is homemade and creamy. But I found myself begging Doug for a sample of his steak-fries. They're made from fresh cut potatoes. Dynamite.

With drinks our bill; $29.63 plus tip. Jim's is not just another restaurant.

Jim's Bistro is open seven days a week. They serve lunch eleven until three Monday through Saturday.
