A Bloomington restaurant is serving up authentic Mexican food with a view.
Eric Shangraw visits Eric's Restaurant across the street from Bloomington's Miller Park, in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Eric's Restaurant took over the old Park Store location on Wood Street 14 months ago. Eric Trujillo and his wife are here all day, seven days a week, making sure it runs to their specifications.
His recipes go back to when he was growing up in South America.
"They are from my grandmother. She was one of the greatest cooks," said Trujillo.
With Mexican and American selections on the menu, the west side Bloomington neighborhood has embraced him.
"The food is fantastic. Eric is always here. And this neighborhood needs this place," said customer Debbie Lane.
"I like the portions," said customer Bob Rohde.
Photographer Doug Smith and I started with a plate of nachos, salsa and white cheese. The nachos are made fresh to order and are excellent.
Doug ordered beans and rice and two soft shell tacos; one steak; one chicken. They're a deal at a $1.75 apiece. Each actually comes with two tacos; one corn tortilla against the other held firmly in place with melted cheese. Doug was so enamored with Eric's creation, he ordered a third!
I had a Mexican breakfast. The Huevos con Chorizo is Mexican sausage mixed with scrambled eggs. I made my own breakfast burrito with the tortillas, beans and rice. This is a morning to ember.
Our bill: $20.88 plus tip.
We took advantage of Eric's killer location and strolled across the street to Miller Park work off some of that fantastic meal.
Eric's is homemade-authentic Mexican in an ideal-quite setting.
Eric's Restaurant is open seven days a week from 7am until 9pm.
He's at the North end of Miller Park.
