Tri-county residents can finally stop driving to the twin cities to get their fix of Famous Dave's flavors.
Eric Shangraw is feeding from a garbage can lid, in this week's you gotta eat.
After four and a half years away, this is Famous Dave's triumphant return to Peoria. Liken it to a second culinary coming for the River City.
"I think Peoria has been begging for Famous Dave's to come back to the market," said co-owner/operator Ron Helms. "And we accomplished that by bringing it back. And ever since then, we've just been running around with our heads cut-off. Trying to meet the demand. And hopefully we are doing a good job," he said.
Back in the kitchen on a brisk Wednesday night a platoon of cooks prepare the fixings. The hot food is a Sunday barbecue everyday of the week. Before the crew assembles each order, the ribs and tips have spent two to three hours in the smoker. Brisket two and a half hours on a low heat.
My photographer Larry and I started with a beer and Dave's Sampler Platter appetizer. The chicken, catfish, and onion strips are a beefy warm up.
We ordered my usual; the garbage can lid. The menu has the lid listed by a different name.
"Famous Feast" is what our waitress proclaimed as she brought our food.
The Famous Feast gets you a wide variety of tastes, making it a natural top seller.
For dessert, Larry bellied up to big fat brownie sundae. I had the award winning bread pudding. It comes drenched in a perfect praline sauce. A killer confection.
We followed the advise on the sign and ate like pigs. Our bill: $87.21, plus tip.
"Way to much food. But I'm excited to take some of it home," said one customer.
I was also excited about the leftovers. You're almost guaranteed a second meal for another day.
