Lake Bloomington is home to one of the best beer and burger joints in Central Illinois.
In this week's You Gotta Eat, Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Green Gables.
Green Gables is a multi-faceted institution at Lake Bloomington. The star of the landmark watering hole is a piece of equipment used to cook what arguably is the best beef patty around.
"The taste is all in the grill. When this place thought they were going to close about twenty years ago, they had so many offers for the grill they couldn't believe it. And then after they sold the grill they had to buy it back to re-open the place," said customer Steven Whelan.
"They have the best hamburger ever. I've never found any better than at Green Gables," said customer Jim Pierce.
"Yes, extensive training. You have to go through many tests before we let you cook," said waitress and cook Bev Elston sarcastically.
Green Gables doubles as a bait shop. They have lures, bobbers, nets and for a couple bucks Canadian night crawlers in the fridge.
They have groceries on under stocked shelves with products occasionally past their due date. There's frozen pizzas. And a liquor section with cold beer and wine.
Photographer Alyssa and I immersed ourselves in the Green Gables culture and ordered a beer and it wasn't even eleven thirty yet.
We ordered double cheeseburgers with everything. It comes wrapped in wax paper teaming with grease from the grill. You need a napkin just to unfold it. But the extra lubricant is worth the clean up once it passes through your lips. If your blood runs thin, your cholesterol is low, or your attitude needs adjustment, this burger washed down with suds is just what the doctor ordered.
We also had cheese balls and french fries. But it's the burger that will bring you back.
Our bill: $21.80 plus tip. We coughed up another fifty cents for a round of pool.
Alyssa cleaned my clock. But on a hot summer early afternoon, it is hard to worried about your pride after a trip to Green Gables.
