A little hot-dog stand in Lincoln is offering a wide variety of toppings on every order.
Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Curry's Weiners in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Curry's Wieners will put just about anything on a hog dog and bun to see if it tastes good. The wide range of toppings means everyone at your table can have a custom order.
"It is great food," said customer Craig Ackerman. "It is great for college students. It is affordable. And it is quick," he said.
Andy and Jenny Curry are the top dogs. They own the place. They scurry around like puppies preparing orders when getting slammed. The menu combinations are all their creations. Experiments through trial and error.
"We made them up. We just thought it would be neat," said Jenny.
"The Reuben. Sounds really weird. Sour kraut. Thousand-island dressing on a hot dog with Swiss cheese. That's personally my favorite," said Andy.
I ordered a "Hawaiian" and a "Bacon Ranch" wiener. The island dog comes with onion, bacon, pineapple, and mango-relish. The pineapple and all beef dog were not a perfect paring on my pallet.
But the Ranch dressing, bacon bits and Swish cheese were a match made in hot dog heaven.
I also had some hand-cut fries with an herb mayo-dipping sauce. I'll stick with ketchup.
The newest member of the News 25 team, Nick Perreault, ordered the hand-dipped corn dog and homemade potato chips. This corn dog is a brute. Nick said it is better than what you get at the county fair. High praise from the new guy.
With drinks, our bill; $15.00 for lunch. Curry's Wieners are a real winner when you want more than just a dog and bun.
Curry's is on Keokuk in Lincoln. They're open six days a week starting at eleven a-m for lunch.
