The advent of Spring means a surge in business for one of Peoria's favorite hot dog stands.
Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Mr. G's in this week's You Gotta Eat.
Mr. G's has been a Peoria Main Street landmark since 1990. Mick Veloso bought the hot dog joint two years ago. He left the corporate life as a designer of high speed networks for banks, for Vienna Beef dogs and buns. Veloso, a Chicago native, says anyone who complains about the snap generated when you bite down a Vienna product, does not know how a real dog is suppose to work your jaw.
"You'll encounter people that complain; oh my hot dog is tough. Well a real beef hot dog you actually have to chew it versus just melt in your mouth," Veloso said.
Customers like the speedy made-to-order preparation. Even though if is not health food, it tastes terrific.
"It is a special treat," said customer Marv White. "I usually get this on my way to work. And they prepare their food pretty quickly. It is fast and it is good," he said.
"One of those (meals) you don't do very often. But when you do it is so yummy. It is a pick me up," said customer Angie Knight. "It is a comfort food kind of place," she said.
The menu on the wall offers a potpourri of options. Photographer Doug Smith had a chicken salad. Yes, something truly healthy! He countered that with some fresh cut homemade fries. You can consume them with vinegar, ketchup or straight.
I had the Chicago style dog. Snuggled in a poppy-seed bun the dog is dressed with mustard, sweet relish, onion, sour kraut, tomatoes, a kosher pickle and sport peppers. Some cry "foul" when they see the kraut.
"Some people say the Chicago dog does not have sauerkraut. No, it doesn't. But Peoria people like it so we put it on there," Veloso said.
These Peoria people liked it. Our bill with drinks; $17.47. -A fair trade for true hot dog connoisseurs.
