Miss Lydic? Hi! Congratulations. You're the winner of a thousand dollar grant from HOI-19 News and CEFCU.
"Thank you very much! Wow! I did get a big check!," said Amy Lydic, Jefferson Primary kindergarten teacher.
That big check is going towards new seats for Miss Lydic's kindergarten class at Jefferson Primary School, but they're no ordinary chairs.
They're exercise balls, designed to help these 5 and 6 year-olds pay attention.
"I had a couple of children that would be up out of their seats and, 'oh, I need to go sharpen a pencil,' and 'I need to do this,' and I put them on the exercise ball, and then they were able to sit and focus the whole time," said Lydic, "I was like, 'This is amazing.'"
Miss Lydic had to borrow 2 balls from the occupational therapist.
Now, she can buy enough for the entire class, and they can do more than keep kids still.
"Actually balls are very good for your back," said Teressa Turk, certified occupational therapy assistant at Jefferson Primary. "If you're having a backache, if you sit on a ball, it helps you sit up straight."
From straight posture to, hopefully, straight A's, Miss Lydic and her kindergarteners will be bouncing towards a brighter future.
