PEORIA, Ill. -- Sporting evil eye contacts this Halloween - bought over the counter could cause problems to your vision.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation says buying colored contact lens from unlicensed vendors could increase your risk of eye infections and even blindness.

Local Optometrist Dr. Rhonda Dameron said there are many health issues that could develop as a result of wearing colored contacts purchased over the counter.

"Contact lens are a medical device,” said Dr. Dameron. “You don't take a chance for even an hour. So you definitely want to make sure that you do have a full eye examination and a fitting by your doctor, ophthalmologist or optometrist."

Selling contacts without a prescription and proper healthcare license carries a fine up to $10,000.
