Breast Cancer Symposium underway in East Peoria

EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Despite a lower mortality rate among breast cancer patients, healthcare officials say there are still too many women not getting yearly screenings.

That's one of the issues being discussed at the 5th annual Breast Cancer Symposium underway at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in East Peoria.

Peoria Surgical Group Physician Dr. Denise Mammolito says doctors are still seeing too many women in advanced stages of breast cancer.

"The first message would be to proceed with yearly mammograms," said Dr. Mammolito. "I recommend screenings for anyone over 40 with no family history on a yearly basis."

Dr. Mammolito says a lack of insurance or concerns about radiation during screenings could be obstacles preventing women from getting regular screenings.

The symposium continues through Saturday.
