PEORIA, Ill. -- A local doctor was recognized for her dedication to providing medical care to children.

Kay Saving, medical director of Children's Hospital of Illinois, was honored Thursday with the Excellence in Pediatric Care Award.

That award was presented by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children.

Saving said she is honored to join the ranks of many deserving recipients who have come before her.

"Well, I would say this is quite an honor, 'cause this is a statewide honor and it's -- again -- from an organization that is highly respected and does great work for kids. So I would say this has been important and very high on the list," said Saving.

The award is given annually to those who demonstrate exceptional pediatric emergency care.
