BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Members of the community will be able to take advantage of free lung testing on Tuesday, August 21.

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is hosting the event to mark World Spirometry Day, offering a 10-minute tests to measure residents' lung health.

The medical center says across the globe, lung diseases are among the leading cause of death and the amount of people affected is on the rise.  However, OSF St. Joseph says many of those lung diseases are preventable or could be controlled at an early stage if detected via spirometry testing.

The free event will take place Tuesday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Business and Conference Center, located on the medical center's campus.  Physicians and nurses at the event will give participants a letter to take to their doctor if the spirometry test results raise concern. Additionally, there will be a free 30-minute education session from 12 to 12:30 p.m.

The community can register for the screening and education session by calling (309) 661-5151. For more information about World Spirometry Day, please visit www.wsd2012.european-lung-foundation.org.
