SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- National Mammography Day is October 19 and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) announced Thursday that it is is using the observance to remind women to schedule their mammograms.

IEMA say that it inspects and certifies nearly 360 mammography machines in Illinois each year to ensure equipment is operating properly and is capable of providing high-quality mammograms to detect breast cancer.

“Early detection of breast cancer is critical for saving lives,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “We conduct thorough annual inspections of mammography equipment to ensure it is operating properly to produce the best image possible.”

The IEMA says that Illinois is one of only four states in the nation accredited by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to inspect and certify mammography equipment under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) State Certifying Agency Program.
