WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is asking energy drink companies to change their labeling and marketing.
Durbin delivered the opening remarks at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
He says he wants the companies to stop marketing to kids under the age of 18, adding they have a responsibility to put all the ingredients on the cans.
Durbin contends because these companies aren't regulated, one energy drink has the same amount of caffeine as seven cans of soda, and that young children can't handle it.
"There's no doubt that these energy companies are marketing to children. We have ample evidence of their advertising. They have 12 year old models on the covers of magazines for red bull, for example, 12 years old. You know who they're trying to sell to," said Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) IL.
When asked if he would support stores carding those buying energy drinks to make sure they're at least 18 years old, Durbin answered that he wants a scientific reaction from the beverage companies, not a political reaction.
