WEST PEORIA, Ill. -- A drive down Heading Avenue in West Peoria is taking a new turn, as the Heddington Oaks nursing home will soon welcome its first residents.

"Peoria County has always said they want to take care of residents that cannot take care of themselves, and that's what we're doing here," said Peoria Co. Board Chairman Tom O'Neill.

The 214 bed home is owned and operated by Peoria County and will take the place of Belwood Nursing Home.

All of those residents will move into Heddington in July, taking advantage of on-site medical care, a hair salon, and more living space.

"I think the County Board has done a fantastic job building it, meeting what the residents are going to want," said Matt Nieukirk, administrator of Heddington Oaks, "so I just can't be happier what we're going to provide for them."

The home will also give up to 80 Alzheimer's patients a secure place to live, something that will help the Peoria County Sheriff's Office search team.

"These people, they were active members of society at one time too, you know," said Lieutenant Mark Molleck, of the Peoria Co. Sheriff's Office. "They deserve to be cared for, and to have a facility like this to care for them, this is a godsend."

Although there's a waiting list for new residents, applications are still being accepted.

The Heddington Oaks administrator says the new facility is one of the most energy efficient nursing homes in the nation, which means for resources for possible additions, like a dialysis unit, and future expansion.

An open house will be held on Thursday, June 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Heddington Oaks, located at 2223 West Heading Ave, West Peoria.
