Wednesday is National Walk or Bike to School Day.
It is a day designed to make parents and children more aware of the health benefits they can gain by walking or biking to school.
However, unsafe street crossings, speeding motorists and a lack of sidewalks may limit a child's ability to walk or bike.
Parents are encouraged to go with their children or map out a safe route to take.
"So, there are two pieces in this, there's the parental comfort and the child's comfort,” said Dr. Seth Podolsky of the Cleveland Clinic. “So, for the child's comfort absolutely parents should walk the route at least more than a few times with them."
Experts say parents can also reap the health benefits by walking their child to school.
