PEORIA, Ill -- In Central Illinois, every reported birth from an HIV positive mother over the past ten years has been confirmed as HIV negative in the infant.
That information comes from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.
Dr. David Slagle said the risk of a baby acquiring HIV from its mother is less than one percent if the mother's treatment is under control.
"It's one of the success stories of HIV treatment over the past 20 years," said Dr. Slagle. "One of the things that we can do is prevent babies from being born positive if mothers are identified and treated effectively during their pregnancy."
The Heart of Illinois HIV and AIDS Center is a program under the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.
The HIHAC will receive more than $800,000 over the next three years to increase medical care for those living with HIV and AIDS.
