Biking is good for your health and good for the environment and it's that time of year to bring out the bicycles.

Wednesday is the 3rd annual "Bike to School Day".

More than 60 events are taking place across Illinois

The national event started in 2013 and is sponsored by the National Center for Safe Routes to School.

Before your kids start pedaling away, here are some safety tips to keep in mind.

- Check the bike to make sure it has reflectors on the front, back and both wheels.

- Make sure the helmet fits securely on the center of your child's head without tilting.

- Map out the route to school limiting the number of street crossings and avoiding high-speed streets.
