It's the 25th of the month and time for your buddy check reminder: Make an appointment for a clinical exam and mammogram, do your breast self-exam and remind a friend to do the same.

This week, the local battle against breast cancer kicks into high gear with the Casting Call for the Cure.

Team captains and volunteers gathered at the Par-A-Dice Hotel on Tuesday to get Race for the Cure fundraising efforts started.

Peoria Komen for the Cure is trying to get more young people like first-time team captain megan holder involved.

"I was inspired. My mom's a survivor of brest cancer and the cause is very important to my family and myself and I hope to find a cure so I don't have to go through the same thing," said Meagan Holder.

"We're really looking to utilizing some new tools and technologies to really activate this fundraising mechanism and close at hand. So who better to utilize than the people who are using those tools daily," said Phil Lockwood.

Lockwood says area residents should be on the look out for ways to donate on-line and learn more about the "Power of Ten" - getting 10 friends to donate 10 dollars each to fight breast cancer.
