PEORIA, Ill. -- Ameren Illinois customers could soon be paying more for electricity.

Ameren has filed for a $206 million rate hike to pay for upgrades to the power grid.

If approved, the rate hike would take effect in January.

Over the past two years, Ameren has spent more than $16 million improving the electric grid in Central Illinois.

An Ameren spokeswoman said those improvements have saved customers more than $100 million.
