PEORIA, Ill. -- New growth brings new opportunities for Heart of Illinois Big Brother Big Sisters.
The mentoring network cut the ribbon on a new facility on Tuesday. The office replaces the former Strong Law Offices.
According to the Executive Director, Jeff Parmenter, the building allows the agency to have greater visibility and space for employees.
In the past year, the network has nearly doubled to more than 260 children.
Officials say volunteers are very much needed at this time.
"We've maintained almost a 100 kids on the waiting list through the last year and a half. This is a program that I feel really strong about. It's needed. It just gives you an opportunity to befriend a child, help them through their formative years, and hopefully get them out of high school, maybe college and get them employed," said Parmenter.
"My little sister, she's a really great kid. She's active, loves to play soccer. She likes rollerblading a lot. She likes to go out to the park, go see movies. And it's really great to be able to help her do those things that she might not get to do on a regular basis," said Big Sister Melanie Young.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is especially encouraging men to become mentors, as 75 percent of the kids on the waiting list are boys.
