PEORIA, Ill. -- According to Airlines for America, Sunday was the busiest travel day in America.
Over 2.5 million people were estimated to hit the skies, boarding planes back home after the holiday weekend.
That even tops what's traditionally thought to be the busiest travel day, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
The General Wayne A. Downing International Airport in Peoria was bustling with activity as passengers headed in and out of town.
Officials said people often wait for the last moment to leave -- trying to squeeze in as much time with their families or for shopping.
