ILLINOIS -- Public colleges and universities are now one step closer to having to enforce stricter smoking rules.

On Wednesday, the Illinois Senate passed legislation, 30-22, that will ban smoking anywhere on public university and college campuses.

That includes parking lots and in university-owned vehicles.

Right now state law bans smoking inside buildings, and within 15 feet of entrances.

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
