PEORIA, Ill. -- Families and friends who lost loved ones to suicide gathered Monday night in remembrance.

They were participating in the seventh annual Whitney's Walk for Life Candlelight Vigil.

The fundraiser was started by Whitney Grotts' family back in 2004 after she took her own life.

"The purpose of this event, which is always on the first Monday of March every year, is for people who have been touched by suicide to come together and to remember their loved one and celebrate their lives," said coordinator for Whitney's Walk for life, Jamie Sanders.

Money raised from the walk helps fund mental health education and awareness programs in Central Illinois.

This year's walk will be held July 25 at Jubilee College State Park.
