PEORIA, Ill.—Peoria's District 150 unanimously approved a proposal Tuesday night to switch employees health insurance carriers.

District employees will be moving from the current carrier, United Health Care, to a self funded program for the 2014 calendar year.

Comptroller and Treasurer David Kinney says with the Affordable Care Act switching to self-insurance will save money and help the district stay within budget.

Kinney says employees will have better options without an increase in the premiums.

"Because now we're in control. We can negotiate our own provider options we can negotiate our own third party administration. So we just feel it is a very positive thing to consider at this time,” Kinney said.

Kinney says this is a case of being able to do better with less money.
