PEORIA, Ill. -- Communities across the nation gathered Monday to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In Peoria, the temperature was just right for a freedom day march.

Dozens gathered for the annual event, which began at Bradley University. The march included participants of various ages, cultures and educational backgrounds.

The event commemorates Dr. King's famous March on Washington, nearly 51 years ago.

"It's great to see here, today, we have both young and old. Some of the marchers here were actually there for the March on Washington, the original march, and now they are here with their children and grandchildren to show them the importance of our history and our legacies,” said participant Ryan Lowry.

After the march, a commemorative service and awards ceremony was held at New Morning Star Baptist Church.
