PEORIA, Ill. -- A longtime educator and community activist is dead, following an overnight car crash.
Dr. Barbara Penelton, 75, was the former chair of Bradley University Education Department.
The Peoria County Coroner says that she was killed when her vehicle crashed head on with another vehicle at the intersection of Sterling and Gilbert at 11:15 a.m. Monday night.
It appears that Penelton's vehicle was heading in the wrong direction when it collided with the other vehicle.
The coroner is not confirming speculation that Penelton became ill before the crash.
Friends speculate that Penelton may have suffered a heart attack prior to the crash. A preliminary autopsy shows that she died from multiple traumatic injuries to the neck, chest, and abdomen.
The driver and passengers of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
