PEORIA, Ill. -- A warning Thursday night from the Peoria Fire Department concerning frozen and broken water pipes.

This comes after one homeowner heated their pipes to $10,000 worth of damage.

This is the water line at a Peoria home.

Fire Investigators say the homeowner used an open flame to thaw out the frozen pipe, which is something investigators strongly advise against.

Another danger with frozen pipes lies within sprinkler systems.

"The Fire Department relies on sprinkler systems to put out a fire 96% of the time, but 4% of the times the fire isn't put out is because the system is impaired,"said Phillip Maclin, Division Chief of Fire Prevention.

A frozen pipe at the Oakridge Apartments, Thursday, caused an electrical issue, leaving dozens of residents in the cold.
